A modem for remote services access is always recommended. Using a modem enables IBM service personnel to dial into your IBM 2212 for faster service. The following modems have been tested for use with the IBM 2212:
You can use equivalent modems, with a minimum data transfer rate of 2400 line speed, with the IBM 2212.

You will also need to provide an analog telephone connection to the modem. The default line speed of the serial port is 19.2 Kbps.
